Easter and Passover

Two big holiday celebrations are coming up this weekend: Passover and Easter.  Passover begins the evening of Friday, April 6th and ends in the evening of Saturday, April 14th.  Easter is Sunday April 8th, but services are also held on Maundy Thursday - also known as Holy Thursday or Covenant Thursday - April 5th and Good Friday April 6th as part of the Easter holy week.

The History Channel website has many great articles about these holidays.  Learn more about the History of Easter and the History of Passover.  Each page has information and video about these holidays, as well as links to related pages.

A 1850 Thanksgiving Story

Remembering to help those in need.  From the Wisconsin Historical Society, published by the Wisconsin State Journal
"It was Thanksgiving morning in 1850," James Pond recalled. His family lived in a one-room log cabin in rural Fond du Lac County, but their harvest had been so poor that his father had left several days earlier to earn money for food.

Back home, his family starved. "We had eaten the last of our frozen turnips," Pond wrote, "(and) the cows had dried up for lack of proper feed. ..." He went outdoors that morning "because I could not bear to listen to poor mother's prayer for relief that seemed impossible to expect."

History of Wisconsin Land

The original survey of what is now the State of Wisconsin was done by the Federal General Land Office between 1832 and 1866. This established the pattern by which property descriptions are still determined, the Township, Range and Section grid.

You can see many of the original Plat maps, and read the field notes taken by surveyors at the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands web pages on the UW Madison website Wisconsin Public Land Survey Records: Original Field Notes and Plat Maps
